Steve Chen was born on the 25th August, 1978 and he is a Taiwanese-American internet entrepreneur who is one of the co-founders and previous chief technology officer of the American video-sharing website (YouTube). Steve spent the first eight (8) years of his life in Taiwan after which his family moved to prospect heights illinois. Steve attended local middle schools and high schools before enrolling in the university of illinois at Urbana-Champaign just like Karim. At university he majored in computer science and he graduated in the year of 2002. He was also the co-founder of AVOS Systems Inc., and also planed and built a video-sharing app which is called or named: "MixBit". He joined and worked as entrepreneur at Google Ventures in the year of 2014 to 2016.
Chen is best known for his work at YouTube, which he co-founded with Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim in 2005. YouTube quickly became one of the most popular websites in the world, and was acquired by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion. Chen remained with YouTube until 2009 before he left the company. When he left, he planed to pursue other entrepreneurial ventures. And launched a video-streaming service for foodies called Nom (nom.com) in 2016, which has since shut down.
Chen is a highly respected figure in the tech industry, and has been recognized for his contributions to the development of online video-sharing platform. He has been named to several lists of influential people, including Business 2.0's "50 Most Influential People" and Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World." He got a job at PayPal where he met Karim and Chad. Unlike the other two (Karim & Chad), Steve didn't jump straight into YouTube, he actually got a job at Facebook Company and he worked there for several months before diving into YouTube. At YouTube, Steve was appointed as the Chief Technology Officer where he ensured that YouTube could support all of the incoming traffic in 2006. Steve was also ranked 28 on business 2.0 list of 50 people who matter now.
In addition to his work in the tech world, Chen is also a philanthropist. He has donated to a number of educational and charitable organizations, including; his alma mater, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Which means that Chen has a good heart and always think about people.
Chen is a visionary entrepreneur who has made a significant impact on the world. His work at YouTube has helped to democratize video production and distribution, and has given a voice to people in every part of the world and has made life easier and better than as we expect.
During the acquisition, Steve received almost the same cash out as compared to Chad's own. Steve received 625 366 shares of Google directly and 68 721 shares through a trust at that time, the shares were worth around $325 million dollars. But now they're worth $1.78 billion dollars like Chad, Steve stayed at YouTube after the acquisition up until 2009. In 2009 he left YouTube but he stayed at Google, however he left google as well in the year of 2011 to start a new company with Chad.
What's Steve Chen Currently Doing Now?
According to a 2023 interview with Nikkei Asia, Steve Chen is currently working on a new internet service that would be related to "wellness and support for one another". He has not released any further details about the project, but said that the idea arose during the coronavirus pandemic time and he's working over it and I will update you guys when he released it.
Chen moved back to his native Taipei, Taiwan in 2019, and resides there with his family. He remains actively involved in the tech community, and is a frequent speaker at conferences and events.
Overall, it seems that Steve Chen is keeping busy with a variety of projects, both new and old. He is clearly still passionate about technology and entrepreneurship, and I am excited to see what he comes up with next.
